Honey CoP Dodoma study visit

The honey Community of Practice brings together entrepreneurs within the honey value chain across all the six AAA countries with a goal of advancing practical knowledge to support business growth. Mid-April the honey CoP organized and conducted a study visit in Dodoma Tanzania. The objective was for members to share knowledge on business opportunities with in the sector. The two-day study visit was attended by 12 participants from Uganda and Tanzania. During the visit members identified various business opportunities and using the business canvas methodology members developed a honey business model that would guide CoP operations in ceasing the available business opportunities.

The business model mainly focused on the aspects of partnerships, joint activities, revenue streams and resource allocation. In addition, members were trained on various methods on how to extract and process propolis plus the various products that can be obtained from propolis and the uses. At the end an apiary visit was made to P&P apiary in Zuzu central Dodoma. Learning points from the visit was the use of different hive technologies (Kenya Top Bar and Langstroth) to enable them to harvest various hive products. Members were also introduced to a new online tracking technology where the different hives are assigned barcodes for tracking honey harvested using an on-line system.
