Ethiopian Soy Mission meets AAA in Wageningen

On January 30, 2014, a Soy Trade Mission of seven Ethiopian entrepreneurs in the soy sector, a representative of the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry and a representative of the AACCSA (Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations) visited Wageningen, the Netherlands. Here, they were informed about the AAA initiative and its activities in Ethiopia by Messrs Piet Heemskerk and Wim Andriesse. Soy is one of the potential commodities for investments and business development of SME’s under the AAA Initiative.

In Ethiopia, soy is one of the governmental priority oil crops under the Growth and Transformation Plan, EPOSPEA (Ethiopian Pulses, Oilseeds and Spices Producers and Exporters Association) and the Netherlands-Ethiopia Public Private Partnership on Oilseeds. The crop is well-suited to the Ethiopian lowland agro-ecological zone. If grown in rotation with other crops, soy is known to improve soil fertility as it can fix nitrogen from the air, into the soil.

The trade mission, which took place from January 27 to February 1, brought the participants to various Dutch organizations, NGO’s and companies in the oil seed sector, including the Dutch Commodity Board on Oils and Fats; Solidaridad, GMP+ and SGS (on quality certification and responsible soy production), and others.

In Wageningen also DIBCoop, the Dutch International Business Development Cooperative presented itself to the mission members. The mission was organised by the Netherlands-African Business Council (NABC).
